Are Casio Watches Waterproof?

In this article, we will answer the question as to whether or not Casio watches are waterproof. There are several different layers to this question that may not be immediately apparent. We will get into all of those details later, but first, we’ll answer the main question posed here.

Are Casio Watches Waterproof?

While Casio watches are not waterproof, they do have varying degrees of water resistance. Depending on the make and model, you can expect water resistance ranging from 30 meters to 200 meters on average. So, no, Casio watches are not waterproof, but rather water resistant.

The truth is actually that no watches are truly waterproof! For a watch to be truly waterproof, it would have to be completely impervious to water damage. No watch actually does this. A lot of times, when people do use the term “waterproof”, they may actually mean “water resistant”.

The reason for this is that if companies actually do advertise their watches as “waterproof”, then they may be liable for false advertising. For this reason, they stay away from that terminology, and instead use the phrase “water resistant”.

A Word on Water Resistance in Watches

One thing that is important to note when looking at the water resistance rating of watches, is that a watch may not be as water resistant as the label would have you believe!

This is because the ways in which a watch are tested for water resistance, don’t necessarily account for all of the factors involved.

Let’s say, for example, if a watch is rated water resistant for 30 meters. It is going to be tested for that resistance either by being sprayed with water jets equal to that pressure, submerged in water at that depth, or placed in a compressed air chamber that simulates that amount of pressure.

The problem with these methods is that they don’t take into consideration movements, such as swimming. This alone, will put additional pressure on a watch. Also, a lot of times we don’t know how long a watch can be continuously exposed to these environments.

Now certified diving watches will actually be able to handle the pressures they are advertised to be able to handle. This is because true diving watches must pass a set of strict criteria to earn that label. One of which is that a diving watch must have at least a 100 meter water resistance.

With all that being said, we do have a list of general guidelines when it comes to water resistance ratings in watches.

Water Resistance General Guidelines

  • 3-5 ATM: Can withstand splashes of water, rain, and maybe even showering, but shouldn’t be fully submerged in water.
  • 10 ATM: Can handle swimming, snorkeling, and maybe even scuba diving.
  • 20 ATM: Can handle deep diving.
  • 30 ATM and up: Suitable for professional diving, or saturation diving

Now that we know that much, the next question would be which Casio watches have more or less resistance to water?

Water Resistance Among Casio Watches

Casio manufactures a variety of different watch types. These different types of watches have varying degrees of durability, as well as water resistance. In this part, we will discuss some of these.

Casio produces retro styled watches that harken back to the 1980’s and 90’s designs. They also produce Edifice watches, which are luxury styled timepieces. Then, of course, they have their Protrek series, which is geared more towards outdoor enthusiasts.

The one people are most familiar with, and inquire about the most, however, would be the G-Shocks. Therefore, we’ll begin by taking a look at those.

G-Shock

Casio’s G-Shock series of watches is widely known and praised for their durability. G-Shocks are among some of the toughest watches in the world.

G-Shock watches are built with resin cases, some of which are reinforced with carbon fiber, and mineral crystal dial windows.

G-Shocks are water resistant up to 200 meters, so you should have no problem wearing them while swimming, or diving.

Protrek

Casio’s Protrek series would be your next best bet after G-Shock when it comes to rugged durability. These watches are great for outdoor activities such as hiking, hunting, and fishing. They include functions such as altimeters, barometers, thermometers, and compasses.

As with G-Shock watches, Protrek’s have resin cases and mineral crystal dial windows. They are water resistant between 100 and 200 meters, depending on the model.

So, the degree of the water resistance here will vary depending on the model. But all of them have a pretty decent resistance to water considering what you might encounter in an outdoor environment.

Retro

These are Casio’s classic design throwbacks. The retro styled watches will have resin cases and acrylic dial windows. The bands will be made of stainless steel.

These are water resistant 30 meters, which makes them resistant to splashes of water and not much else. They probably shouldn’t be fully submerged in water.

Edifice

Casio’s Edifice series is geared more towards a luxury styled watch. While they are not true luxury watches, they do have similar styles to luxury watches.

They will usually have stainless steel cases with mineral crystal dial windows. Edifice watches have a water resistance of 100 meters on average. This means that you can most likely safely swim, snorkel, shower, and scuba dive while wearing one.

These are just some of Casio’s assortment of watch types, but it should give you a good idea of what to expect from them as far as water resistance goes.

Wrapping Things Up

To summarize, we now know that Casio watches are not waterproof. There will, however, be at least some type of water resistance among their watches though.

Casio’s watches are known for both their durability as well as reliability. Water resistance is just one aspect of this.

  1. The information was very interesting. I liked it and put thumbs up on all articles. A question I have is about Tissot Watches. I now know they have a Swiss Quarts movement and a 10 ATM rating. What makes them expensive to the common folk like me? I’d like to hear your opinion regarding this Tissot.
