G Shock Tough Solar Watches Review

In today’s article, we will be focusing on the G Shock Tough Solar watches. This is a specialized version of G-Shock watches. We all know about Casio’s G-shock watches. They are arguably Casio’s most popular watch series. They are known worldwide for their toughness, ruggedness, and ability to withstand some of the harshest environments imaginable.

With the popularity of these watches, it is not hard to imagine that there would be different versions of G-Shocks created, each with specialized features. Well Casio has done just that! There are, in fact, different types of G-Shock watches out there on the market. We have actually covered the G-Shock Wr20 Bar series in a previous article. Today though, we are goin to be looking at the G Shock Tough Solar series of watches. Well, let’s get right into it!

What Does G-Shock Tough Solar Mean?

To start with, we’ will answer some common asked questions about this particular G-Shock variant. The first question that a person would typically ask is: “What Does G-Shock Tough Solar Mean?” To put it simply, the G- Shock Tough Solar is a version of G-Shock that uses Casio’s proprietary solar powered features to power the functions of the watch. Now, with that out of the way, we can get into a little bit more detail about these watches.

G-Shock Tough Solar Build Quality

G-Shock Tough Solar watches are tough (obviously). They are G-Shock watches, and are built as such. They have cases made of resin, with mineral crystal dial windows. These watches are highly resistant to impact. The bands are plastic. They are water resistant either 100 or 200 meters, depending on the model.

G-Shock Tough Solar Features

This series of Casio watch shares many of the same features. They are all going to have basic features such as world time, date, backlight, 12/24 hour formats, and stopwatch functionality. But those aren’t the defining features of this series. The first, and most obvious defining function of these watches is their solar power function.

Different models may have additional features such as chronograph functions, or sensors that measure altitude and/or temperature.

Solar Power

This is one of the main draw points. The solar powered function allows light to be converted into energy. This, in turn charges the battery. What that means, is that you will not ever have to manually recharge, or change out the battery in these watches.

Now if you are thinking that the watch has to be worn outside on a sunny day, you would be wrong. The technology that Casio employs in their solar powered watches works even under fluorescent lighting. So even under weaker lighting conditions, the watch will still receive a charge.

How Long Does A G Shock Tough Solar Last?

The one thing you may be wondering about these solar powered watches is how long they last. They can last quite a while, actually, with an average lifespan of 7 to 10 years. That’s just an average though. This can be more or less. Mileage may vary.

Now if you are talking about how long they can last without needing a charge, the battery can last up to 10 months off of a full charge.

Power Indicators

The power indicators will display how much battery life you have left. This will help to give you an idea of how much light the watch is getting each day, and if you would need to expose it to additional light to help maintain a charge.

Atomic Timekeeping

Atomic timekeeping is another staple feature present in this series of watches. Basically atomic timekeeping is the most accurate measure of time. It is measured by an atomic clock. Atomic clocks are the most accurate clocks in the world as they measure time based on the oscillations of atoms.

What an atomic watch does, is obtain the time from an atomic clock via radio waves received from that clock. Thus a watch with atomic timekeeping will be the most accurate watch you can own.

Pricing

So how expensive are these watches? The prices of different models of G-Shocks can vary by pretty large margins. Some models are dirt cheap, while others can be in the multiple hundreds of dollars range.

The G-Shock Tough Solar watches can fall into any of these price ranges. It really just depends on what model you get. Some can be cheaper, while others can be very expensive.

Final Thoughts

G-Shock watches have always been popular, and will continue to be popular for the foreseeable future. Incorporating solar capabilities into them is an interesting addition. These solar powered options add yet another great feature to an already amazing watch series. Some of them may be a bit pricier than many of the more basic, bare bones G-Shocks out there, but I think that they are worth the added price, especially if you don’t mind paying just a little bit extra.
